Now, we need to make sure that the government takes action on this recommendation! I am writing to express my support for restoration of funding to the arts, as recommended by the Select Standing Committee on Finance and Government Services in its recently-published Report on the Budget 2010 Consultations. I am referring specifically to recommendation number 26 in the report: "Make funding of the arts a high priority in the 2010/11 budget by returning to overall actual funding levels of 2008/09." The current and proposed cuts to the BC Arts Council are directly damaging to arts and culture in BC, adversely affect businesses that supply goods and services to arts organizations, and are destroying access to culture in some of BC's communities. I ask that your budget introduce further measures to increase the B.C. government's support for arts and culture; the Council's 2008-2009 legislative appropriation was a step in the right direction, but only a step. What is required is a comprehensive and realistic plan for public support of the arts and culture through the B.C. Arts Council, a plan that includes a series of sustained budget increases.
