In the March 2010 budget, the BC government announced 50% cuts to support of the arts. In addition, they introduced a new program to bring arts funding more directly under political control, and take more of it out of the hands of the BC Arts Council, an independent arms-length agency of the provincial government.

These are 50% cuts to an already inadequate level of support; cuts which amount to less than one-twentieth of one percent of the provincial budget, providing insignificant cost savings to the government.
